I intend to operate: loco + 5/6 carriage Int'l Expresses; loco + 4 carriage Local trains; and various freight trains and vehicle and truck 'shuttle'. Given the maximum train length of ~ 1metre, do you think I could shorten the layout to 9' and increase the width to 2'6"? Which s/ware did you use? I just don't have the time to make it happen, currently. So, I sit and read Model Railroader, peruse the net, and dream. What'll likely happen is a small switching layout at some point. Now I need to tidy things up (like pack away the tools and surplus rolling stock rather than pile it all up at the other end of the layout) so I can take some photos of the whole layout.
