The original audience came from the poorer members of society. It wasn't until Sulivan managed to move it up market by playing it in his concerts that they started making any money. Many of Sulivan's other works have faded into obscurity. I can't even remember the title of the grand opera he felt much more important, and I've never heard it. On the other hand many people know the tune to "Onward Christain Soldiers" but have no idea who wrote it. Indeed G&S was the popular music of its day.
