What was the last album you bought from an artist that was new to you, purely on the basis of a personal recommendation, without having heard it first?  Leave your answers in the comments.

  1. Tim Hall says:

To set the ball rolling, one of the last two records I bought was “Purple” by Baroness, which appeared in several people’s end-of-year lists. Before that was “Under the Red Cloud” by Amorphis, recommended I think by Sam Lewis, which ended up in the top five of my end-of-year list.

The other record I bought yesterday was “Trouble in Mind” by Jodie Marie, bought for entirely different reasons.

  2. PaulE says:

District 97 – In Vaults and iamthemorning – from the house of arts are the most recent. I think both had more than one recommendation.

  3. Duncan Mawson says:

    Spirit by Comedy of Errors.

It was getting some good press on the Big Big Train Facebook page, so I thought I’d buy it – Didn’t even check anything out on YouTube, which I usually do.

  4. “The Satanist” by Behemoth after Dom Lawson’s review of it in the Guardian.

  5. Tim Hall says:

That’s a belter of an album, isn’t it?

  6. Nick E says:

Most recent: Caligula’s Horse – Bloom

Prior to that, there have been numerous titles, but the ones that immediately spring to mind are the most recent releases by Anekdoten and Seven Impale.

  7. Chris Hall says:

Would you include recommendations from Sound on Sound because of the way they recorded the hi-hat? ;-)

  8. Tim Hall says:

Perhaps The Railway Modeller should start doing album reviews?

  9. Abi Sutherland says:

    The “Hamilton” soundtrack.

(Proving I’m not your core readership. Again.)

  10. Tim Hall says:

I think my core readership is about seven people. Anyway, you went to see Mostly Autumn in November….

  11. Abi Sutherland says:

Speaking of music I experienced on a recommendation.

  12. Synthetase says:

I don’t get much in the way of personal recommendations as there are only three people who are really into music in my social group and there isn’t a great deal of cross-over between us.

Last album I bought was pre-purchasing Mantra-Vega – although I heard the demos on this blog. I can’t remember exactly the last album I bought on a recommendation that I hadn’t heard prior, but I did buy Skin by Panic Room after your description made it sound right up my street. Loved it, so I bought all their other records. I also bought Mostly Autumn’s Dressed in Voices, but I’d heard some of their other material on Youtube already after reading about them here. I think I got Haken’s The Mountain without hearing any of their stuff.

  13. Synthetase says:

I almost forgot, I bought Steve Rothery’s The Ghosts of Pripyat after you panned Pink Floyd’s last outing. The money I was considering spending on ‘warmed up leftovers’ I decided to use to take a punt on Rothery instead. Was not disappointed. Truly excellent album.

Oh and Lonely Robot. It’s all coming back to me now :)

  14. Ian Redfearn says:

Caligula’s Horse – Bloom, based on your end of year review.
This is pretty damn close to being Album of the year for me (pushed by Gazpacho – Molok and Mark Tremont – Cauterize).

Now about to indulge in Lonely Robot – purely because you have mentioned it a few times on Twitter.
