Has Classic Rock presents Prog Jumped the Shark?

I am very disappointed by the way this month’s Classic Rock Presents Prog has published an appalling attack on one of the bands I follow in the guise of a review.

Even though the review of the actual gig was very positive, the reviewer devoted more space to unfair, inaccurate and deeply damaging nonsense accusing the band of lacking professionalism regarding promotion than to the actual music. Exactly what is this supposed to achieve?

Reading between the lines, which I know is always dangerous, it seems as if their “crime” appears to be spending their time touring the length and breadth of the country playing before actual paying punters rather than spending it schmoozing with self-important music journalists who never venture beyond the M25.

I’m thinking of other bands who I won’t name who seem to have to spend as much time travelling to meet up with the London-based hacks as they actually do out on the road. That to me epitomises the fundamental rottenness of the “Music press as gatekeeper” model of the old-style music business.

It’s sad to see Classic Rock Presents Prog descending into the “Build ‘em up, knock ‘em down” mentality normally associated with style-over-content rags like the NME. I had, perhaps naively, thought this magazine was above that. They’ve done a lot for this band in the past, now they give every appearance of having turned against them for reasons that appear to have far more to do with music press politics than with music.

My copy is now in the bin.

    While I haven’t gone as far as throwing my copy in the bin, I was also disappointed with the review. So much so that I’ve taken the unusual step of writing to the magazine!

    One thing that galls me in particular is that the reviewer in question is also the magazine’s editor and, while decrying the professionalism of one of the hardest working bands I know, has published a magazine which has typos in it! Pot=Kettle?

    I think the Mag has been getting progressively worse. So much so that my latest copy half the articles weren’t worth a read. As for the editor his article on Marillion in the cover issue had Typo’s and if my memory is corrrect was Factually incorrect, and he claims to be a big fan. But you already know my opinion without ever having met him.

    Two dreadful articles in the reviews pages.

    But would “Build ‘em up, knock ‘em down” have any effect with a prog audience ?
    The fans have a history of ignoring the media and carrying on regardless with their music. Or it really would have ended in the late 70s.

    Two dreadful articles between which you could draw the dots and deduce a possible agenda.

    Of course, I might just be reading too much into things. Draw your own conclusions.

    I haven’t read the offending article as I don’t buy the mag, but its sad to see that this is how the wheels turn in the music industry today. Can’t say I’m surprised though. Its very disappointing when all the band wants to do is make great music and play for the fans.

    Since only about 30% or so of what CRP…P writes about is actual prog, they don’t even live up to their own name. So why anyone would hold them to a standard above a fanzine is beyond me.

    I realize they have to fill their pages somehow, but all the schmoozing for power metal and decidedly regular rock acts is, to me, far more sickening than any personal attacks or typos. When a magazine supposedly devoted to an eclectic genre writes primarily about acts whose music is neither innovative nor even marginally out of the mainstream, it’s built on a lie from the very beginning.

    I wouldn’t complain if Prog went Bi-monthly, get rid of all the dross articles, get rid of Ewing and write about Prog bands. There has been a distinct lack of bands Ewing doesn’t like e.g. IQ. Although I am informed there will be an IQ article very soon

    If it’s the Panic Room review you’re referring to… I noticed it instantly.. and the “critique” was base and shoddy… I’ve noticed what might be a lack of sub-editors or even editors in the late publications…

    One issue correctly has Nektar as an English band ( though “formed” in Hamburg ) and then someone writes a review calling Nektar a German band…. Confussion abounds through lack of good sub-editors…
