Invisible Sun

Everyone on the tabletop gaming interwebs is talking, or something subtweeting, about Invisible Sun by Monte Cook Games, whose Kickstarter has already raised more than a third of a million dollars.

There is heated discussion about the very high price. When you look at the fundamental structure of the game, designed around the needs of people with jobs, children and busy lives, you get the feeling this game is explicitly pitched at middle-aged players with a lot of disposable cash.

So, does this make Invisible Sun the tabletop gaming equivalent of the archetypal mid-life crisis motorcycle or Fender Stratocaster?

I’m probably being a little snarky here. Monte Cook has the game design chops to deliver which in all probability with be a very good game. I hope those who plunked down that amount of cash ends up getting their money’s worth.

  1. I sometimes think the same thing about the high-end Blu-ray Disc boxsets that are produced from blockbuster franchises — the steelbooks, the limited-edition sets with the figurines, etc. They seem aimed at the same kind of market.

    Don’t get me started on the multi-disk boxed sets of classic rock albums with disk after disk of alternative takes and demo versions of the classic songs. I’ve ranted about them before.

  3. I actually like the “outtakes” editions, if only from a historical perspective, but only for the albums I actually care about. A lot of classic jazz albums are getting this treatment now, and there it can be interesting. But I don’t want that to come at the expense of an affordable version of the original release in good quality.

    I think some of this is cult of personality around Monte Cook. I think the game sounds like a neat idea but not something that I’d ever be likely to play and wow, it is pretty darn expensive. I also kind of wonder how these unique secrets work — do they have an unlimited number of them?

    Can’t think of many people other than Monte Cook who’s got the reputation to be able to pull something like this offf.

    But I do wonder how many of these Black Cubes will end up sitting promintently on game shelves but will never actually be played,

    Ah see, that’s the difference between this and my Fender Stratocaster. I play mine almost every day :)

    I’m a bit intrigued by the game, given the quality of Monte’s products, but the price is far too steep for me. More to the point, there are tons of systems out there already that will accommodate surrealistic cityscapes, hidden agendas, etc.. For $200.00, you receive the bare minimum required to play. If you want the full experience, prepare to drop $550.00, for all of the unlocked sourcebooks, interactive campaign, etc.. That’s ridiculous. I’ll play Lacuna – an amazing $20.00 indie game, if I crave a dose of the surreal. Having said all of this, I wish Monte well. I’m sure the game will be beautiful. I hope people buy it, play it, and realize how much they miss slinging dice with good friends.
