This is a timeline of major historical events of Kalyr. At least some of this information would be known by any character with the History skill at a reasonable level. Almost all hard facts about the "Golden Age" are forgotten, and the actual events are buried in many layers of mythology. The events of recent centuries are known in somewhat better details, but even here there are many things over which historians disagree.
(I have omitted dates from the early part of this, because the actual dates of all but a few events are now forgotten.)
The kandar and zughru are brought into the world from their original home plane by the Guardians.
The city of Filgeth founded by Kalan I, Vulan of the Kandar. The kandar calendar is based on this date. A few years later, the partly-underground city of Rhukadh founded by the zughru.
The kandar and zughru are fruitful and multiply, and the cities of Valgar, Keylin and Kavarnak are soon founded. Unfortunately some kandar grow into deformed mutants, said to be punished by the guardians for their evil acts. These mutants were later known as the vordral.
Death of Kalan I, who rules for 40 years.
Most vordral are killed in the name of 'racial purity'. Some escape into remote areas
and swear revenge on the kandar and zughru.
The city of Ravenah founded.
Kalan III dies without a successor. Start of the successor wars.
Karmork founded by Ketuth I. Names himself Vulan
Ketuth slain in battle of Goraz, ending the successor wars. Aldor I crowned in Keylin
Revolt of the zughru. Zughru king, Kazugh, slain in battle of Kavarnak.
Aldor II grants independence to zughru kingdom of Rhukadh. Kaugraur I crowned as it's first king.
Battle of Vordral's hill, after several thousand vordral band together and wipe out a small kandar town. This mutant army is later scattered by kandar troops.
Vohrleyn becomes capital under Aldor IV
Filgeth rebellion against southern domination.
Zughru/Kandar war. Filgeth overrun and sacked by zughru, but later recaptured and rebuilt.
Great magical workshops established in several kandar cities, in which many wondrous devices were made.
Beginning of the 'Golden age' of peace and stability. This period known as the First Empire.
Kandar wizards contact the planes. Members of two extra-planar races, the small purple Uleem, and the reptilian Lesardaan are brought across the dimensions to serve the kandar as slaves. Some wizards also summon terrible monsters.
After a bad attack of monsters, Tharn Kulendar II forbids any further such experiments, and many wizards are executed or exiles.
Second Zughru-Kandar war. First empire collapses from within as civil war between Karmork and Keylin erupts. The kandar cities are laid waste, the magical workshops destroyed.
The Guardians themselves in conflict with one another over whether to intervene in the war.
The Guardian Kardrak destroys the city of Kavarnak with fire from the sky.
First cases of the great plague, known as The Death
The war fizzles out as the kandar and zughru population is halved in the plague.
During the Times of Darkness, as they were called, civilisation fell to an iron age level. Many petty wars, two numerous to mention, took place during this period.
Academy of the Mind founded to preserve knowledge of the powers of the mind.
Kalan crowned Vulan at Vohrleyn, naming himself Kalan XI. He sets out to reconquer the kandar lands.
Wars of Reunification as Kalan XI crushes the local Tharns.
Start of the Second Empire. The powers of the mind are initially outlawed, and the Academy of the Mind is forced underground. There is however, a slight renaissance in science.
Kandar again experiment with the once-forbidden art of planar travel. This time it is humans who get discovered. Vast numbers of humans are transported across the dimensions to become slaves to the kandar.
Vozandar I attempts to conquer the zughru kingdom of Rhukadh. Fails after nine years of war. This war weakens the empire considerably.
Collapse of Second Empire after Vozandar II dies without a successor. Filgeth, Ravenah, Karmork, Keylin and Vohrleyn become independent kingdoms
The magical laboratories of the wizards in Filgeth explode, devastating much of the city.
Ravenah falls to Karmorki invasion fleet.
Kazadar, the successor to Volkarn, marches on the rich southern kingdoms. Defeated at the decisive battle of Karik's pass by a combined army of the Tharns of Vohrleyn and Keylin.
Kazadar conquers Filgeth, and names himself Vulan. The cities of the south do not recognise him.
Kazadar again attempts to invade the south. His army sails down the Val, capturing Goraz and Valgar, and besieges Keylin for three years
Even after a three year siege, Keylin does not fall. Eventually the city is relieved by a force from Vohrleyn, which drives Kazadar's army northwards, and destroys it in the decisive battle south of Valgar.
Kazardar dies, broken by his defeat. His successor, Ayaan, makes no further attempt to invade the south.
Karmork under Volkarn the Terrible conquers neighbouring cities, and founds the Konaic Empire. This empire was notorious for it's cruelty and repression.
Kingdoms of Keylin and Vohrleyn are merged on the marriage of Thukendar of Keylin and Celkarda of Vohrleyn.
Thukendar and Celkarda's armies conquer the surrounding city-states. The growing empire becomes richer (though smaller) than the Konaic empire in the north.
Karmorki army marches from Filgeth to retake Calbeyn. They overrun the small garrison at Garas Bridge, but are defeated by a large army from Calbeyn at the decisive battle of Narak Gaur.
All-out war between Karmorki and Southern empires. No significant territorial gains by either side, but heavy losses considerably weaken the Karmorkis.
Kyleth, son of Thukendar and Celkarda, becomes ruler of the southern empire following the death of his father, and names himself Vulan. The title is of course disputed by the Karmorki ruler, Yavaath
Calbeyn falls to the southern empire after overthrow of the Karmorki puppet Tharn.
Kyleth dies. Some historians claim he was murdered, and name several possible murderers.
Karmorki Empire faces rebellions in Filgeth and Ravenah as well as war with the south.
Ravenan war of independence, which heralds the break up of the Karmorki empire
Southern invasion of remains of Karmorki empire. War ended by capture of Karmork itself.
Ruthandar II named Vulan of the Third Empire, which now includes every province except Ravenah and Kelbers. This time, nobody disputes his claim.
Ravenah incorporated into the empire after a prolonged siege.
Third empire. Somewhat backward and medieval compared with the second empire.
Increasing numbers of humans settle in the southern Zurglauz peninsula. A number of freewheeling human settlements are established in the area.
Death of Vulan Azthol II, without a successor. A bitter power struggle ensues, in which many would-be Vulan's are murdered. The empire edges dangerously close to civil war, fortunately averted when Luzathe, the last surviving credible candidate, assumes the throne. Historians disagree over whether she actually poisoned any of her rivals.
Tanaldel, son of Luzathe becomes Vulan following the death of his mother.
Beginning of the construction of the great temple in Nuhimn in southern Zurglauz, an event which is considered to mark the founding of the human nation of Numidix.
During this period unrest grows in northern cities over domination of the south.
Serious unrest in Karmork following the death of Sarkan Uvaan, and the appointment of the unpopular Zalyr as his successor by the Vulan.
Sarkan Zalyr murdered by his own bodyguard.
The merchant fleet of Ravenah goes on strike over a dispute over taxation. For half a year no ship sails in or out of the city, paralysing trade.
Riots in Filgeth. The legions refuse to obey orders to put down the riots by force. For several months, Filgeth teeters on the brink of what might have been a very bloody civil war. Eventually, Vosil appointed as the new Sarkan, an excellent diplomat who managed to unite the various factions of the city.
Kavaan, a notorious hard-liner, appointed as Sarkan of Karmork, ending the three-year interregnum.
Treaty of Valgar grants limited independence to Karmork, Ravenah, Selnin, Calbeyn and Filgeth.
Humans are admitted into the Calbeyn-based Fifth Legion for the first time.
Anti-human laws passed in Karmork forbidding all humans to own property, carry weapons, or use magic.
Karmork inspired coups in Blikneyr and Kezerin fuel fears of the growth of a second Karmorki empire.
Vorsath becomes Sarkan of Karmork following the death of Kavaan. He proves even more a hard-liner than his predecessor. The earlier anti-human edicts are now much more strictly enforced. His coming to power is followed almost immediately by a massive purge, with an estimated two thousand executions. Many more people flee into exile, some of those are also hunted down and killed by assassins.
Murder of Tharn Ralkendol Tyr of Calbeyn. His son, Lendor, is accused of the crime, and flees before he can be captured. Lendor's sister, Lenata, assumes the Tharnship of the city.
The signing of the charter of Numidix, and founding of it's Assembly. No kandar nation recognises it, and many kandar refuse to acknowledge it's existence.
Tharn Zalann of Selnin murdered, supposedly by agents of the Black Hand. His successor, Alyus, incorporates Selnin into the Karmork empire. This is followed by a massive purge, with many hundreds murdered.
A long-running dispute over mineral rights in the wilderness area south of Filgeth between the Kandar of Filgeth and Calbeyn and the zughru of Rhukadh turns into war.
A major zughru offensive captures a large area south of Filgeth. Many kandar and human mining settlements in the area are destroyed, with most of the miners massacred.
The Fifth Legion, aided by a large force of human auxiliaries and several chapters of Knights of Filgeth, Calbeyn and Kardak, drive the zughru back and recapture much of the territory lost the previous year. Disunity amongst the kandar and human forces prevent them from consolidating their gains. The war degenerates into stalemate.
The imperial legions of Vohrleyn destroy a large number of outlaw human settlements in the area north of Keylin, killing up to a thousand people, and driving many hundreds of refugees northwards.
The legions of Karmork attempt to invade Numidix. The Karmorkis raze all coastal settlements, and try to force their way inland. The Numidicans counterattack with guerrilla raids on Karmorki camps and supply columns, causing heavy losses, which eventually force the Karmorkis to pull back to the coastal strip.
Nar-tharn Lanae d'n Alarnida of Zenatan is disinherited following an indiscretion with a human slave. She is replaced as Nar-tharn by her cousin, Randath.
Nar-tharn Randath of Zenatan is himself assassinated in Calbeyn.
Sarkan Vosil of Filgeth dies after a long illness.
