Character generation for Arrhan Empire Frontiers uses the Fudge rules. The freeform and rules-light nature of Fudge makes it an ideal system for on-line games.
Fudge is a role-playing game written by Steffan O'Sullivan, with extensive input from the Usenet community of rec.games.design. The basic rules of Fudge are available on the internet at www.fudgerpg.com and in book form from Grey Ghost Games, P.O. Box 838, Randolph, MA 02368. They may be used with any gaming genre. While an individual work derived from Fudge may specify certain attributes and skills, many more are possible with Fudge. Every Game Master using Fudge is encouraged to add or ignore any character traits. Anyone who wishes to distribute such material for free may do so - merely include this ABOUT FUDGE notice and disclaimer (complete with Fudge copyright notice). If you wish to charge a fee for such material, other than as an article in a magazine or other periodical, you must first obtain a royalty-free license from the author of Fudge, Steffan O'Sullivan, P.O. Box 465, Plymouth, NH 03264.
Player character are crewmembers of the not-so-good ship Venus Blood. The ship's crew is a mix of Arrhans and humans, since it's no longer unusual to see people of both races mingle together in every kind of possible situation. The blood has recruited people from all sorts of backgrounds, from ex-military types and doctors gone bad, to the violent scum of the universe. Characters with cybernetic enhancements or genetically altered will be considered, but don't get carried away.
Abilities encompass both attributes and broadly-defined skills. Each ability is rated on a seven-level scale of Terrible - Poor - Mediocre - Fair - Good - Great - Superb.
You may take one ability at Great, two at Good, four at Fair, and two at Poor. The remainder are Mediocre, except for psionic abilities.
You can specialise in many of these abilities. If you specialise, your ability is one level higher in your speciality, and one level lower for everything outside your speciality. For example, a Great scientist specialising in Chemistry would be a Superb chemist, but only Good for any other science. The specialisations given below are examples only; you may choose others.
Only Arrhans may have Psionic abilities. Unlike physical and mental abilities, a character cannot use the ability at all unless you've chosen that psionic ability as one of your Fair, Good or Great abilities
Gifts are any special ability or benefit the character has which isn't covered under the abilities above. Typical examples are beautiful or handsome appearance, contacts in the IPCC, ambidexterity, animal empathy, or anything else you can think of. Your character may have two gifts.
Faults are anything that makes life more difficult for a character. The primary faults are those that restrict a character's actions or earn him a bad reaction from chance-met NPCs. Various attitudes, neuroses and phobias are faults; so are physical disabilities and social stigmas. There are heroic faults, too: a code of honour and inability to tell a lie restrict your actions significantly, but are not signs of flawed personality. You may take as many or as few faults as you like, provided they fit your character concept.
Write a half-page's worth of character biography. I want to know where the character came from, where he or she learned those abilities, and how your character came to taking up space piracy as a career.
If you have not already done so, come up with a name. Then decide on age and appearance; hair, skin and eye colour, height and weight.
